Aurouran Newspaper Article – The Hoedown Showdown Is Back!

July 25th, 2013 by Kirsten Jones

In 2006, I walked in to a bar in Aurora, ON to participate in a singing and songwriting contest.  I didn’t really know what I was getting into, but I had entered because I wanted to win the advertised Gibson guitar.  (The $1000 cash, studio time, and Magna Hoedown performance slot in front of 5000 people wasn’t bad either).  When I found out the judges were the legendary Sylvia Tyson of Ian and Sylvia, Scottish/Canadian Tenor extraordinaire John McDermott, Heather Ostertag (then the head of the Canadian Country Music Awards) and the mayor, I was quaking in my boots.  But after three weeks of competition, and after playing seven original songs for the judges and a packed bar, I was awarded the Hoedown Showdown first place and my beloved guitar. I still play that guitar to this day, and the competition helped to bolster my confidence and my career.  I am thrilled to say they are reviving the contest, and I get to announce the winner!  So fun.  Here’s an article in the Auroran, as well as a link to the contest.   You have until July 31st to enter – go to it!

CCMA Nomination – Roots Artist of the Year!!

July 28th, 2011 by Kirsten Jones

I’m very excited to share this latest development – the Canadian Country Music Awards voters have selected me as one of the five nominees for Roots Artist of the Year! It is a dream come true, and if you’re reading this, I probably have YOU to thank in some way. Thanks so much for your love and for your support. This award means so much to me because it represents one of the only ways in which Americana/Alt Country gets recognized on the national stage in Canada. It is a very rich genre of music in this country, as evidenced not only by the other nominees (Corb Lund, Shane Chisolm, Ridley Bent, and Jimmy Rankin) but by the 100 or so other Canadians I know and love who could also be nominated in this category! For all my independent friends out there pounding the pavement in this industry, every step forward for one of us is a step forward for all of us!

To quote ISC Founder/Director Candace Avery’s letter…

the song “I Don’t Wanna Live Like This ” has won Third Place in the Americana category in the 2010 International Songwriting Competition. With over 15,000 entries from 115 countries, this is a remarkable achievement, and ISC and its judges applaud the skill and dedication to the craft of songwriting that this win has proven.

April 9th, 2011 by Kirsten Jones

It’s that time of year again, and for the third year in a row, one of Kirsten’s songs from The Mad Mile has been nominated in the International Songwriting Competition out of 15,000 entries worldwide. She is very grateful to be nominated again, and is especially excited to be in a category that includes such Americana stars as Australia’s Kasey Chambers and Austin’s Carrie Rodriguez. This year, she was nominated for “I Don’t Wanna Live Like This”, a co-write with the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris. Previous years have seen nominations for “You Ain’t Comin’ By” and “Bittersweet Grand Canyon”.

Juno Nomination for the Mad Mile’s Denis Tougas!

March 15th, 2010 by Kirsten Jones

Thanks to an early Canadian iTunes release, my NEW album has a Juno nomination! My good (and very talented) friend Denis Tougas has been nominated for Engineer of the Year at the 2010 awards for The Mad Mile, which will take place on April 18th in St. John’s, Newfoundland. And thanks to the May 11th release date that is still coming, the album is still eligible for next year’s awards. For now, I just want to say how incredibly hard Denis worked on this album, and I am so thrilled that he is being recognized by his peers (for the third time, I might add).
